I initially created this as a tiny little 15 x 15 cm canvas one afternoon. It kept stalking me from then on every time I walked past it. I decided it needed to be done as a big proper piece, and while they're very similar, they're not identical, consider them the fraternal twins of mandarin paintings.
As I was painting this piece, I just couldn't come up with the name, but this piece kept stalking me. One night when the piece was almost complete, I realised what it stood for, it was Joy!

This little piece symbolises joy to me. I realised too that's why the name was so elusive in coming forth. I have had plenty of happiness in life, but that gift of Joy is still elusive. I find that happiness is great, but it's based on external happenings. Either an event, or a person, something that happens and it makes you happy. Consequently happiness is described as fleeting, and I believe it's because the external thing that causes the happiness is fleeting. By it's very externally reliant nature, happiness can only ever be fleeting.

Joy however is internal. It is not dependent on any outside person or event, it is an internal gift. Those people you see that seem to have a twinkle in their eye, and are uplifting people, then you hear their life story and it's so awful, how can they still be smiling?? That is Joy. I want that. I want to be like those people, to have the gift of Joy that is not dependent on outside influences, but instead influences those outside of me, and uplifts them.
So I painted this piece which subconsciously, all along, represented Joy.
