Urban Whimsy is my homage to the time my daughter and I spent in her early years, turning our Cityscape into our playground!
I had a very hard time with Post natal Depression. I made the decision to try and be present in the moment with my daughter so that I wouldn't look back with regret during that time. As my daughter heads off to full time school, I know with confidence that I have celebrated life with her, and there is no regret in how I mothered through depression!
We live in town. I needed to get out of the house everyday for head space, what else do you do but turn the town into your own personal park. Benches became balance beams, the epic building growth that's happened here in the last 5 years became a daily excitement to watch, seed pods, broken footpaths, cafes, back alleys (which got very beautiful and interesting thanks to First Coat, a street art festival that ran for 4 years in our town!), basically urban adventuring. My daughter and I explored, met shop keepers, made friends, and owned the town as our backyard. Our cities are often our places of work, and therefore no one wants to be near them for their leisure time, for us though it was a place of discovery and joy!
During some more recent construction, a wall was revealed that showed parts of many previous paint jobs on it. The colours were the inspiration for this background. The coral, the blue, that mintish green that is reminiscent of 70's (was it?) bathrooms, the yellow, and chocolate colours. All there in glorious detail, speaking of the shops of yesteryear. What better backdrop to paint my symbolic mother/daughter pears on, than a piece of our own town history, in celebration of the fun times we had in our urban playground, and what I consider successfully navigating motherhood with depression!
